Game Guild Evolution: Traditional to Crypto

Long before the surge in the popularity of Crypto Game Guilds, there are the traditional ones, groups of organized game players playing on a regular basis together in one or multiplayer games, taking part in competitions and professional e-sports leagues.

Gaming guilds exist for almost every online game we have today, remarkably in games of strategy, such as role-playing video games (RPG), massively multiplayer games (MMO) and first-person shooters (FPS).

But with the start of the pandemic, face to face gaming competitions were restricted, prompting game developers, guilds, and leagues to think of an alternative way to keep the game going. Then came Axie Infinity, a game that has been in existence since 2017 suddenly became so popular especially in the Philippines, where many users started to live off its play-to-earn model, making between $200 to $1000 per month, maybe more, depending on the market price, player’s skill and time invested.

This attracted a lot of people, but not everyone can buy NFTs to start playing and earning the game. In 2021, when the hype was so high, Axie Infinity requires an initial investment of around $3,000 to purchase three Axies, to make a team.

Here is when the guilds came in.

With aim to support individuals and communities to participate in such games without upfront capital, play-to-earn game guilds provide gamers with the necessary funds and resources to for players to experience the playing and earning through these games.

Scholarships are awarded by game guilds providing the NFTs on loan to players, so they can start playing immediately without any investment. The in-game token earnings are then divided between the player and the guild, as a model of their profit-sharing scheme. Of course, playable assets, profit sharing and quotas vary depending on the guild and player.

With the inception of metaverse, blockchain-based gaming guilds bring players together to earn in blockchain-based economies creating new economic opportunities for more people.

It is a win-win situation for both guilds and players. The guilds receive a percentage of the player’s earnings and in return, the players get what they need to join the game.

Moreover, the investors who do not have the time to play these games rely on guilds to manage their assets, waiting for return of investments.
